Whirlwind Project Past Events Panel & Community Dialogue: Passion about the Passion: Luther, “the Jews” and Bach's St. John Passion with Chester Alwes, Roger Digges, Rick Layton, Michael Shapiro & Steve Shoemaker. The focus of the Christian worship tradition during the season of Lent will be the Passion of Christ. One of the musical masterpieces of this tradition is Bach’s St. John Passion, which will be performed by the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana (BACH) on Saturday evening, March 17. While many view Bach’s music as a work of art to be cherished in itself, others associate the themes of John’s Gospel with centuries of anti-Jewish persecution. Many also struggle with the demonization of Jews in a long tradition of passion plays from Oberammergau, Germany to Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Our distinguished panel will try to shed light on this complex issue by elaborating on the uses and abuses of The Gospel of John and St. John Passion, on the roots of anti-Jewish sentiments in Luther’s Germany, and on Bach’s musical interpretation of this difficult text. The panel will be moderated by Steve Shoemaker, Executive Director of the University YMCA and will feature presentations by Chester Alwes, Music Director of the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana; Roger Digges, Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church; Richard Layton, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Illinois; and Michael Shapiro, Director of the Program in Jewish Culture and Society at the University of Illinois.
